VOLUNTEER TUTORING OPPORTUNITIES

Literacy & English as a Second Language

Tutoring is a rewarding experience that enriches the lives of both students and tutors.
Vita Education Services has a long history of delivering free instruction to adults through well-trained tutors.  Tutors can choose to work in the community or at the Bucks County Correctional Facility.

Tutoring is most often delivered in small groups of 3 to 5 students two hours a week for an eight to ten week period of time.  Specific curriculum is used which focuses on the accomplishment of a specific skill such as reading, writing, math, or language improvement.  There are some opportunities for tutors to work individually with students, but the selection of these students is based on their low level of literacy.

Tutor trainings in both basic literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) are offered at different times of the year. Basic Literacy tutors work with adults who want to improve basic reading, writing and math skills.  English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors work with adults for whom English is not a first language and who wish to improve conversational and written English.  A twelve hour training in either literacy or ESL provides tutors with an understanding of the adult learner, the techniques that will help you become an effective tutor, and the responsibilities you have as a Vita tutor.

After training tutors are individually interviewed and given a choice of tutoring opportunities. Availability, location in the community and the tutor’s personal interests are used to determine placement. Our professional staff provides ongoing support as you work with your students.
