Summary of Programs 2008-2009

Literacy Programs

 

·         Provided one-to-one tutoring and small group instruction in Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) to 245 adult students

 

·         Provided 24 classes to 552 adult students in Basic Literacy, GED preparation and (ESL) at eight sites throughout the County

 

·         Provided two Family Literacy Programs at Bensalem Head Start and Snyder-Girotti Elementary School in Bristol Borough, serving 45 families

 

·         Twenty-two students are participating in the Adult Diploma Program in conjunction with Bensalem School District.

 

·         Demographics:  55% of Vita’s students live in lower Bucks County, 45% reside in central and upper Bucks County. About 70% of Vita’s students are in ESL programs.  ESL students come from 70 different countries and speak 32 different native languages.

 

Personal Decision Making (PDM) Programs

 

·         Served 394 men and women in the Bucks County Correctional Facility through the following programs:

§         One-on-one PDM tutoring taught by well-trained volunteers

§         Twelve 14-hour classes taught by staff

§         Three 42-hour courses in Job Readiness taught by staff, assisted by

business community volunteers and mentors

§         PDM Workshop Groups at the Men’s Correctional Center

 

Decisions for Teens (DFT) Programs

 

·         Served 40 teens and young adults through programs given at:

§         Bristol Borough Middle School

§         Youth Center at the CareerLink, Bristol
