Position Title: Tutoring Program Coordinator for Lower Bucks County

Background: Vita Education Services has a 31 year history of working with adult learners and volunteers.  The tutoring program at Vita provides one on one and small group instruction led by well-trained volunteers in basic literacy, GED preparation and English as a Second Language. Volunteers interested in becoming tutors are required to take a twelve hour training course in literacy or English as a Second Language. This provides the foundation skills needed to become a tutor. Students interested in being tutored are individually interviewed and assessed. Goals are clarified and an individual program plan is written. Tutors are given the plan and are expected to meet with students a minimum of two hours per week to reach literacy goals.  The Tutoring Program Coordinator is critical to the success of the program. The Coordinator develops relationships with tutors and students to support matches; the Coordinator creates a viable plan, recommends instructional techniques and offer suggestions to ensure student/tutor matches are meeting the goals of the program.    

Reports to:     Director of Programs

 Status:    Part Time, 18 hours per week, 52 weeks

Salary:   This employment classification is designated as part time employee.  The salary is $14,976.  Benefits are pro-rated vacation, sick days and personal days according to the guidelines in Vita’s Policy Manual.

Summary of job:        
The Program Coordinator at the Bensalem Resource Center is responsible for the assessment of students (both literacy and English as a Second Language), training of tutors and coordination of student/tutor matches.   Some flexibility of hours is permitted, although at least one evening per week is needed for testing of students and coordination of matches.  Tutor training sessions on Saturdays are required several times a year. Travel is necessary to assess students at locations throughout Bucks County.  Mileage is reimbursed.

Responsibilities:

• pre and post assessment of students
• evaluation and program planning (IEP) of students
• training of tutors in basic literacy or ESL
• matching of tutors and students
• coordination and support of matches
• Student Reviews of progress
• data collection and reports as required by grant guidelines
• attendance at staff meetings including Program Improvement Team meetings
• communication with staff
• collaboration with other agencies that interface with Vita
• execution of other responsibilities as assigned

  Qualifications:

• bachelor’s degree in education
• experience in teaching and program planning, preferably with adults
• knowledge of adult assessments
• strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• ability to handle multi-tasking
• appreciation of empowering education and volunteer strengths
• maturity and sensitivity in working with diverse populations
• comfortable in a collaborative environment
